How do I start the car?

Updated today

After pressing "start ride" and once you're seated, you can turn on the car. If the car has a physical key, it will be in the glove compartment. If not, it's built-in, and you won't need a key to start the car. For your convenience, this information is also on a sticker in the car.

Refer to our manual if you have questions about specific car models.

First aid for startup issues:

General solutions

  • Check if you have fully depressed the clutch (if present) and the brake pedal.

  • Is the steering wheel still locked? Remove the steering lock by pulling the steering wheel while turning the key in the ignition.

  • Make sure the car is in Park (P) when starting.

  • Apply the handbrake when starting the car.

  • Reopen the car with the key or app.

Specific error messages

  • Key not detected: Lock the car and unlock it again with your key or app. This will recognize the key.

  • Immobilizer activated: Lock the car and unlock it again with your key or app. This will recognize the key.

MyWheels app solutions

  • Step out, completely lock the car, and then unlock it again via the app. Try to start the car again—this almost always works.

Still no luck? Give us a call; you can find the number in the app under your current ride.
